RECOMMENDATIONS ON AUTOMATIC PILOT DEVICES (A.P.D.)

INTRODUCTION

Correctly adjusted Automatic Pilot Devices can allow for the accurate steering of the vessel in differing conditions.

ACKNOWLEDGING

That the use of Automatic Pilot Devices may be restricted by local regulations.

EMPA Recommends :

  1. Where the use of Automatic Pilot Devices is not restricted by local regulations, the use of such devices in pilotage waters should be left to the professional judgement of the pilot in conjunction with normal Master/Pilot relationship.
  1. The pilot should never be obliged to operate the A.P.D.
  1. Whenever an A.P.D. is being used, a qualified helmsman should always be immediately available, in order to take over the helm, should the necessity arise.
  1. The procedure to change the operation mode from ‘manual steering’ to ‘automatic steering’ and vice versa and the override mode should be clearly explained to the pilot before using the Automatic Pilot Device ( see also MSIS Directive 024 / Chapter 13 rule 13.12 ).
