PILOT TRANSFER ARRANGEMENTS

Captain Brian WILSON has done a good work in promoting the safe rigging of pilot ladders in cooperation with the Standard Club. Many thanks from EMPA!

The two links below takes you to the articles which went out to 9000 ships recently.

URSINE, collision with a moored ferry on Humber. PEC holder was not the master. Master had no experience manoeuvring ro/ro vessels and the PEC holder thought the master would do the manoeuvre. When berthing stern first they hit a ferry which unknown to them was still occupying their berth! In fact the Dutch PEC holder performed an illegal act of pilotage.

The MAIB report on the Flying Phantom. This tugboat capsized while towing a bulk carrier on the River Clyde in Dec.2007. 3 crewmembers lost their lives. The conclusions are interesting.

The Goal of the Research

The goal of this research is to be able to predict the forces, moments, sinkage and trim induced by nearby banks on a sailing vessel.

Flanders Hydraulics Research has commissioned the Maritime Division of Ghent University to execute a research program involving bank effects. Both institutions are involved in research of ship manoeuvring in shallow and restricted waters, squat, ship-ship interaction, bank effects, etc..

The Belgian pilots train on the ship manoeuvring simulator of Flanders Hydraulics Research. For training purposes it is very important to model all significant forces. Due to the lack of knowledge on bank effects induced by sloped and semi-submerged banks an extensive research program is initiated.

The main properties of this comprehensive program are shown on this website. Please get involved if you are interested! We are willing to exchange information.

In May 2009 there will be International Conference on Ship Hydrodynamics in the Vicinity of Banks held in Antwerp, Belgium. The Agenda, venue and exact data will follow later this year but the organizers welcome already the active participation by pilots.
