A very interesting letter from our Vice-President David Williamson came in, dealing with "Criminalisation of Maritime Pilots", Training Standards of Pilots in the UK or better said how international training standards are ignored, the new "blame culture" and consequently insurance matters and finally the question, why do government agencies not react. If you do not read this article, you surely miss something.

Flanders Hydraulics Research has commissioned the Maritime Division of Ghent University to execute a research program involving bank effects. Go to our research & development page for more details about this excellent research project. See valuable first results, *.pdf, English-version here. On 13 - 15 May 2009 there will be the International Conference on Ship Manoeuvring in Shallow and Confined Water: Bank Effects held in Antwerp, Belgium. The Agenda, venue and exact data will follow later this year but the organizers welcome already the active participation by pilots. See the overview and call for papers here!
